An article in today’s Sydney Morning Herald revealing the depth of opposition to the proposed art school ‘merger’:
National Art School at Darlinghurst and Sydney College of Arts at Paddington set to move to UNSW.
“As a long-standing neighbour of Sydney College of the Arts, the Artereal Gallery team would like to express our sadness and regret at hearing of SCA’s imminent closure as part of a planned merger with UNSW Art & Design.”

SOS SCA
Friday 15 July
Art Gallery of NSW
On Friday the 15th of July, students and supporters of the Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) will be holding a peaceful vigil in protest of the proposed closure of SCA.
On the 21st of June, the University of Sydney announced that it had signed a heads of agreement with the University of New South Wales, which would close SCA and force current students to transfer to UNSW from Semester 1 2017. This decision was made without any prior consultation with students.
In 1976 SCA became one of the first tertiary art schools established in New South Wales. Today it has around 600 students, and its alumni include artist Shaun Gladwell, designer Marc Newson and film director Jane Campion.
Danica Knezevic is a current PhD candidate at SCA and a Sydney artist. “It is an absolute tragedy that the University of Sydney does not have the vision and respect for the arts to develop and maintain Sydney College of the Arts,” she said. “SCA is an integral part of the future of arts education in Australia and its demise would be a disaster for our culture.”
SCA offers a unique studio-based arts education under the guidance of some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. For many SCA students, the exceptionally high calibre of academic staff was the key reason for choosing the University of Sydney. All current SCA staff have been asked to ‘reapply’ for their positions at UNSW, without any guarantee of future employment.
While undergraduate SCA students and those enrolled in the Master of Contemporary Arts will have the choice to remain enrolled in a University of Sydney degree, all units of study will be delivered by UNSW and follow their design-based curriculum.
This vigil highlights the plight of Sydney College of the Arts and coincides with the opening of the Archibald Prize, one of the most prestigious art prizes in Australia. Many artists who have graduated from SCA have exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and three have won the Archibald Prize: Ben Quilty, Cherry Hood and Fiona Lowry.
